Weis Markets was started in 1912 by Harry and Sigmund Weis as a modest local shop called Weis Pure Foods on Market Street in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. Jonathan, Harry's grandson, now runs the business with locations in West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, New York, and New Jersey. They have more than 23,000 workers across their retail locations, corporate offices, manufacturing plants, and distribution centers. Weis is a company built on independence; they process their own milk and use the extra butterfat to create their famous Weis Quality Ice Cream, which has 60 varieties so far. Weis Markets takes pride in assisting regional farmers. Each year, they purchase more than 20 million pounds of locally farmed food in Pennsylvania alone, and they do the same in all the other states.
