Gift Cards Travel Stores Closed on Thanksgiving Day 2022

Major businesses like Walmart, Target, Kohl's, Macy's, and Best Buy opened their doors on Thanksgiving for the better part of a decade in an effort to attract customers (and controversy). Retailers continued to push the envelope by opening earlier each year after the midnight opens of 2011 that started this trend. On Thanksgiving Day in 2019, Walmart opened at 6 p.m., while JCPenney opened at 2 p.m.
This custom wasn't without criticism, but it appeared to be here to stay.
That is, until COVID-19 devastated the retail sector and the world in 2020. Almost every big retailer indicated that they would be closed on Thanksgiving Day and that Black Friday sales would be quiet.
Major stores continued to observe the Thanksgiving holiday in 2021, although they held more-or-less typical sales that began in the early hours of Black Friday.
How will this affect Thanksgiving in 2022? It is still in progress. Some large shops are delaying the sale and declaring they'll be closed on Thanksgiving (Nov. 24 this year). And customers agree that was the right move: 68 percent of American consumers believe that retailers should be closed on Thanksgiving, according to a holiday study from 2021.
However, many retailers still haven't revealed their future plans.

Stores Officially Closed on Thanksgiving Day 2022
Boscov’s
The department store stated in August that it would be closed Thanksgiving 2022, citing the pandemic as the reason for a variety of changes, according to the CEO of the company. I'm happy that this shift has established itself as the new standard and I hope it sticks throughout the retail sector.
Costco
Nothing unexpected here. Even before COVID-19, Costco always remained closed on Thanksgiving. Additionally, it is one of the few significant merchants that is closed on other federal holidays, such as New Year's Day and Labor Day. There are already a lot of Costco's early holiday offers available.
REI
The outdoor business has a long-standing tradition of closing on Thanksgiving AND Black Friday while continuing to pay its staff and urging everyone to #OptOutside instead. This practice dates back eight years. We predict the same for 2022.
Sam’s Club
On Thanksgiving, Sam's Club will be closed (this is nothing new; it did so even before the pandemic). Additionally, it will be closed on Christmas and New Year's Day (see its holiday hours).
It typically maintains its regular hours on Black Friday, opening at 10 a.m. for ordinary subscribers and at 8 a.m. for Plus members.
Target
The rising "staying closed on Thanksgiving" trend has been led by Target. It announced (10 months in advance) in January 2021 that it would be closed on Thanksgiving of that year. Target's CEO also said in a memo to staff in November 2021 that the store will always be closed on Thanksgiving.
Target's doors won't be open, but early customers can queue up to their heart's content or browse for deals online (Target has a tradition of launching Black Friday deals about a week early) on Black Friday morning.
Stores Open on Thanksgiving 2022
Although we anticipate that the majority of stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day this year, others are customarily open, albeit with shortened hours. You can anticipate the following to be open for medication necessities, food, and more on Thanksgiving, even though they could not be providing doorbusters:
- Albertsons
- Bass Pro Shops: (Opened 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving in 2021)
- Big Lots: Big Lots was open on Thanksgiving 2021 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- CVS: Pharmacy hours vary, but many locations (especially 24-hour locations) will be open for shoppers.
- Cabela’s: Was open at 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving in 2021.
- Dollar General
- Family Dollar
- Giant
- Harris Teeter
- HEB
- Hy-Vee
- Kroger
- Meijer
- Rite Aid: Pharmacy hours will vary.
- Safeway
- Sprouts Farmers Market
- Starbucks: Some locations (including those inside Target stores) will be closed.
- Walgreens: Pharmacy hours will vary.
- Wegmans
- Whole Foods
Our list will be updated when stores confirm their plans. The fact that businesses will be closed on Thanksgiving shouldn't significantly change your shopping list. Most retailers will introduce promotions online. In fact, you might already be too late if you wait until Black Friday or Thanksgiving to start thinking about purchasing. Expect the best Black Friday discounts to sell out in a matter of seconds since supply chain problems plague the retail sector.
Is Walmart closed Thanksgiving 2022?
Yes! In 2022, Walmart won't be open on Thanksgiving. Before the year 2020, Walmart had a reputation for opening at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving and being open into the early hours of Black Friday.
However, times have evolved. Thanksgiving Day marks the official closing of Walmart. The day before Thanksgiving, Walmart will be open as usual; but, after that, they'll be closed until Black Friday morning (Nov. 25).
Why are stores closed on Thanksgiving this year?
The decision to keep stores closed is being driven by a number of issues. First of all, calling in workers on a significant national holiday (particularly one linked with family) isn't a good look after two years of a pandemic, staffing shortages, and overworked employees. Many of the businesses that are still closed on Thanksgiving Day said that they did so in order to "give their staff a day off."
Additionally, by closing on Thanksgiving, shops won't lose much (apart from perhaps some publicity). With the epidemic in full stride in 2020, online Thanksgiving shopping set new milestones. Customers are likely to be glad to shop online if shops can keep popular items in stock this year.
How long do Black Friday sales last?
Black Friday always occurs on the Friday following Thanksgiving, therefore this year it will be on November 25. We can anticipate bargains going online at midnight and continuing till the end of the day because the majority of shops will want to take advantage of what will normally be the busiest 24 hours of the event.
You can be sure that Black Friday won't just be a single day of sales, though, as those times are long gone. Instead, count for many merchants to build up their inventory for at least a week, if not longer. Naturally, the sales from Black Friday carry over to Cyber Monday, which is always the Monday after Black Friday.
